Semiactive control strategy for a phase II smart base isolated benchmark building

چکیده
This paper presents a semiactive control strategy for the seismic protection of the phase II smart base isolated benchmark building subjected to near-fault earthquakes. Magnetorheological (MR) fluid dampers controlled by an optimal direct output feedback control algorithm with a voltage generator are used as semiactive control devices. The benchmark building is an eight-story base isolated building, and the superstructure is considered to be a linear elastic system with lateral–torsional behavior. To reduce the energy transmitted to the structure from the ground, a combination of linear and nonlinear bearings is installed at the base of the structure. It is difficult to design the controller for this benchmark problem because of the nonlinear behavior of the isolation members. Linear control theory is frequently applied to nonlinear structures because there are no appropriate and well-defined control theories that can consider general types of nonlinearities. Therefore, to improve control performance, the nonlinearities of the isolation members are considered indirectly with the linear control theory during the design process of the controllers for the MR dampers. Numerical simulation results under various earthquake inputs show that the proposed control strategy is effective in reducing the responses of the isolation members as well as the superstructure. Therefore, the proposed control system could be used as an improved control strategy for base isolated buildings subjected to near-fault earthquakes. Copyright r 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Smart base-isolated benchmark building. Part II: phase I sample controllers for linear isolation systems
Sample controllers for a three-dimensional smart base-isolated building benchmark problem with linear and frictional isolation system are presented in this paper. A Kalman filter is used to estimate the states based on absolute acceleration measurements. Input filters are used to better inform the controller of the spectral content of the earthquake excitations. A reduced order control-oriented...

The first phase of the seismically excited base-isolated benchmark building was received well by the structural control community, culminating in the March 2006 journal special issue. The special issue contained contributions from over dozen participants world-wide. While the focus of the Phase I effort was on linear isolation systems, Phase II attempts to galvanize research efforts on control ...
متن کاملFuzzy Control Strategy for Seismic Response Reduction of Smart Base Isolated Benchmark Building
Control strategy based on fuzzy algorithm is presented for response reduction of the seismically excited base-isolated building, which is an eight story base isolated non-linear building similar to existing buildings in Los Angeles, California. When a control method based on fuzzy algorithm to a structure is used for vibration reduction, it has inherent robustness, easiness to treat the uncerta...
متن کاملStructural control benchmark problem: Phase II—Nonlinear smart base-isolated building subjected to near-fault earthquakes
Many branches of engineering, mathematics, and sciences, have relied on benchmark problems as a standard means to compare different solution techniques. Since 1996, the ASCE Structural Control and Monitoring Committee and Task Group on Benchmark Problems, the U.S. Panel on structural control, and IASCM have developed a series of benchmark control problems that offer a set of carefully modeled r...
متن کاملBenchmark structural control problem for a seismically excited highway bridge-Part III: Phase II Sample controller for the fully base-isolated case
This paper presents the fully base-isolated highway bridge benchmark problem. The highway bridge benchmark problem consists of two phases: (1) Phase I—the bridge deck being base isolated only at the abutments and the center bent being integral with the pier (without isolation), and (2) Phase II—the bridge deck being fully base isolated at both the bent/pier and abutment locations. In both phase...
